If plants have been summering outside, the fungus gnats are coming back inside with them. Damp soil, dropped leaves, and open air outdoors are exactly what fungus gnats need to lay eggs, and once those pots move back in, warmer indoor temperatures speed up their life cycle. What feels like a new fall problem is usually a population that was already there, just now impossible to ignore under grow lights.

What Fungus Gnats Actually Damage

The adults show up first. They do not bite, and they barely fly, but a real population means small clouds rising every time a plant gets watered or brushed against, and that gets old fast across a full shelf of houseplants. The real damage happens below the surface. Larvae living in the top inch or two of soil feed on fine root hairs and organic matter, and on younger or more stressed plants that root damage shows up as wilting, slowed growth, or leaves that yellow for no clear reason.

Fungus Gnat Prevention Before Bringing Plants Indoors

The best window to deal with fungus gnats is before the pots cross the threshold. Check the soil surface for adults resting near the base of each plant, and let the top two inches of soil dry out completely before the move, since dry soil is inhospitable to both eggs and larvae. A thorough soak and drain a few days ahead, followed by a full dry down, breaks the moisture cycle gnats depend on instead of waiting for symptoms to show up once plants are already inside.

Biological Control for Fungus Gnats Already in the Soil

Entomite contains a soil dwelling predatory mite that patrols the top layer of potting mix and feeds on fungus gnat larvae and pupae. Because it works in the growing medium itself, it reaches the stage sticky traps and surface treatments miss entirely. For a heavier population, Entonem contains beneficial nematodes applied as a soil drench, and they actively seek out and kill fungus gnat larvae in the growing medium. Female fungus gnats can lay well over 100 eggs, and the life cycle from egg to adult completes in roughly three weeks, so one application will not catch every stage. New larvae keep hatching from eggs laid before treatment, so weekly reapplication for two to three weeks brings the population down and keeps it there.

Both products work well together, and both pair with sticky traps, still the simplest way to track whether a population is climbing or dropping. Traps alone will not solve a larval problem in the soil, but they show whether the biological control is working.

Since fungus gnats have no sachet option, plan for an ongoing maintenance approach once the population drops. Spaced out bottle or drench applications on a light schedule keep pressure minimal, rather than stopping treatment entirely and waiting for the next spike.

Building Fall Fungus Gnat Control Into a Houseplant Routine

Once a population drops to minimal levels, the goal shifts from active control to maintenance. Watering habits matter more than any single treatment. Fungus gnats need consistently moist soil to reproduce, so letting the surface dry between waterings makes the growing environment far less hospitable even without ongoing applications. For a mixed houseplant collection coming in from a summer outside, treating the whole group together, rather than waiting for symptoms on individual plants, keeps one overlooked pot from bringing the problem back.
