Cryptobug L (Cryptolaemus montrouzieri) — Mealybug Destroyer Larvae
Cryptobug L contains the larvae of Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, a proven biological control agent known as the mealybug destroyer. These larvae are aggressive feeders that crawl across plant surfaces to consume mealybugs in all life stages—eggs, crawlers, and adults. Use Cryptobug L for direct, targeted control in any growing environment. Cryptobug L is chemical-free, IPM-compatible, and safe for use in greenhouses, nurseries, orchards, flower beds, interiorscapes, outdoor landscapes, indoor plants including houseplants and more.
Use For
Cryptobug L larvae feed on all life stages—eggs, crawlers, nymphs, and adults—of many mealybug species, including:
• Citrus mealybug (Planococcus citri)
• Longtailed mealybug (Pseudococcus longispinus)
• Obscure mealybug (Pseudococcus viburni)
• Other common greenhouse and field mealybugs
They also provide control of soft scale insects when encountered in the same environment.
When to Use Cryptobug L
Use Cryptobug L wherever mealybugs are present and fast, targeted biological control is needed. It’s effective across all growing environments—greenhouses, nurseries, orchards, interiorscapes, outdoor landscapes, and indoor crops.
Recommended for:
• Active mealybug colonies, hotspots, or widespread pressure
• High-pressure zones where chemical sprays are not viable or desirable
• Crops requiring clean, residue-free pest control
• Mealybugs harboring deep in plant tissue, folds, or crevices—areas sprays often miss
• Growers seeking a reliable biological solution for mealybugs and soft scale
Cryptobug L larvae crawl along stems, under leaves, and into tight plant folds to reach mealybugs hiding in protected areas. This makes them a more comprehensive control option than surface-level sprays, especially in dense or layered foliage. Whether you're growing in soil, hydroponics, containers, or field settings, Cryptobug L integrates easily into your IPM program.
How It Works
• Mode of Action: Larvae consume mealybugs completely—eggs, crawlers, and adults
• Behavior: Larvae crawl under leaves, along stems, and across plant surfaces to locate and feed on pests
• Visual Effect: Mealybugs are eliminated as larvae move through affected areas
Feeding Rates:
• Early-stage larvae (young instars) primarily consume mealybug eggs and young nymphs.
• Late third and fourth instar larvae are the most voracious: They can consume up to 30 mealybugs per day under optimal conditions.
• The larval stages last 12–17 days. During this time, late-stage larvae can consume up to 30 mealybugs per day. While feeding rates vary by instar and environment, total consumption across the full larval period is substantial—especially in dense colonies with abundant prey.
Lifecycle of Cryptolaemus montrouzieri (Mealybug Destroyer)
Egg Stage
• Eggs are light brown and oblong
• Laid near mealybug colonies, often in waxy buildup
• Hatch in approximately 5–6 days under optimal conditions
Larval Stage (Included in Cryptobug L)
• Larvae grow up to 13 mm
• Covered in wax filaments, resembling mealybugs
• This stage is the most aggressive feeder—consuming eggs, crawlers, nymphs, and adult mealybugs
• Larval feeding lasts 12–17 days before pupation
Pupal Stage
• Pupae are about 4 mm and wax-covered
• Typically found on stems or protected plant surfaces
• Pupation lasts 7–10 days
Adult Stage (Included in Cryptobug)
• Adults are 4–5 mm long with black wing covers and a reddish-brown head
• Capable of flight and dispersal across larger areas
• Adults feed primarily on mealybug eggs and young stages
• Females lay 5–10 eggs per day, totaling up to 400–500 eggs over a 50-day lifespanPressure Level
Definition
Rate per 10 sq. ft
Repeat Interval
Preventative
Mealybugs are not yet visible but risk is present due to past issues, nearby outbreaks, or known seasonal pressure
2–5 larvae
Every 2–3 weeks
Low Pressure
Mealybugs are present in isolated spots or early-stage colonies; minimal honeydew or plant damage
5–10 larvae
Every 2 weeks or until problem is under control
Medium Pressure
Mealybugs are visible across multiple plants or zones; moderate honeydew buildup and early signs of plant stress
10–20 larvae
Weekly or until problem is under control
High Pressure
Mealybugs are widespread or rapidly increasing; heavy honeydew, visible damage, or curled leaves
20–40 larvae
Weekly or twice weekly as needed or until problem is under control
Application Notes:
Adjust rates based on crop type, climate, and mealybug density:
• Fast-growing crops (e.g. cannabis, greenhouse vegetables) may benefit from frequent releases to match growth cycles.
• Slow-growing or woody crops (e.g. fruit trees) may allow longer intervals between releases but require higher initial rates for established or high-pressure problems.
• Dense foliage crops (e.g. citrus, ornamentals) may require higher rates due to hiding spots and wax buildup.
For tailored recommendations, reach out to use via our livechat in the bottom right hand corner of the site.
• Begin releases as soon as mealybugs are detected, or preventively in high-risk environments
• Apply directly onto plant leaves and affected foliage
• Focus on hotspots and areas with visible honeydew buildup
• Evening releases support settling and establishment
Best Working Conditions
Temperature: Minimum 61°F; optimal range 77–82°F
Humidity: Moderate to high relative humidity supports feeding and reproduction
Compatibility Guidance
• Allow residues from oils or soaps to dry before application
• If combatting an active problem, products like essential oils (e.g. neem) are safe to use as a knockdown to reduce pest levels before introducing Cryptolaemus larvae
• Wiping mealybugs off plants with water and a towel is also effective for reducing populations before releasing beneficials

What to Expect
• Cryptobug L larvae begin feeding immediately after release
• Mealybug populations are actively suppressed as larvae consume eggs, crawlers, and adults
• Results build quickly in hotspots and continue as larvae move through affected areas
• Reapply based on scouting observations to maintain control and prevent resurgence
Recommended IPM Pairings:
• Cryptobug L (larvae) – Complements adults by targeting mealybugs hidden in dense foliage and crevices.
• Isarid® Mycoinsecticide – Adds a fungal mode of action for mealybugs and soft scales in high-pressure zones; fully compatible with beneficials.
• Dune™ – Improves plant resilience against sucking pests, reducing overall pest pressure and supporting IPM longevity.
• Horiver Yellow Sticky Traps – For monitoring secondary pests like whiteflies and thrips that often coexist with mealybugs; essential for scouting and early detection.
• Essential Oil Knockdown (e.g., neem-based) – For pre-release reduction of heavy mealybug populations; apply beneficials after residues dry.
Cryptobug L fits seamlessly into scouting-based IPM programs and performs reliably across crops and environments.
Cryptobug L FAQs
Does Cryptobug L contain adults?
No. Cryptobug L contains only larvae. For broad coverage in large or hard-to-reach areas, adult beetles can be purchased separately.
Is Cryptobug L safe for indoor use?
Yes. Cryptobug L is chemical-free and ideal for enclosed environments, including houseplants and interiorscapes.
How soon will I see results?
Feeding starts immediately. Control builds quickly as larvae move through affected areas. Once prey is depleted, larvae may cannibalize and eventually disappear.
I grow (X)—is this safe to use?
Yes. Cryptobug L is safe for all crops and plants—ornamentals, citrus, fruit trees, vegetables, flowers, cannabis, and houseplants. It’s chemical-free and fully compatible with any IPM program.Questions about Cryptobug-L?
